Perhaps one of the most underrated of classic country music’s stars is Boxcar Willie who released very few albums in his career and went widely unnoticed outside of the southern states of America. Despite this he had a great voice and had a unique sound compared to a lot of what else had been released. This is why he found a lot of success by covering classic songs such as Wabash Cannonball and pretty much every Hank Williams song you can think of.
This album was the first one I had bought of Boxcar Willie’s and with a huge 21 songs on it including greats such as San Antonio Rose, Red River Valley, Peace in the Valley and Wreck of the Old ‘97, I knew I would get some enjoyment out of it. There’s not much variation in the songs and it’s like listening to an alternative Hank Williams album, but it’s full of character and great performances regardless. I think Train Medley is one of my favourite songs, and Boxcar does it with such a fast-paced and effortless arrangement that it flows brilliantly and keeps you listening.
I can’t think of anyone else like Boxcar Willie, you really should have this record in your collection if you like classic country. It’s definately the best asssortment of his tracks you’ll be able to buy - and you can get these albums for next to nothing. I have two more Boxcar albums which I’ll probably get round to one day, but if you only get one, get this one.
