The first thing that convinced me to buy this album when I played a demo of it on iTunes was the exceptional sound quality. Considering that the majority of Wills’ hits were popular in the 40’s and 50’s is a testement to how well this small collection has been remastered. The album only features two songs from the Texas Playboys’ regular frontman Tommy Duncan, but the others sung by Johnny Preston, Gene ‘Tag’ Lambert and Jack Lloyd are perfomed just as well and they sound great alongside Wills’ band.
New San antonio Rose with the lyrical addition is unquestionably on of my favourite songs of all time and the recording on this album definately the best of the many copies that I own. The album just misses out on a 4 star rating due to the fact that 11 songs isn’t much of a ‘best of’ collection, certainly when the Take Me Back to Tulsa collection features around a hundred songs and only costs slightly more.
Bob Wills & The Texas Playboys were the pioneers of Western Swing music and inspired the likes of Merle Haggard with their Bakersfield sound so they should be heard and appreciated by all country music fans. I would recommend this album to first time listeners of Bob Wills as it’s definately the best quality cut available.
